Glowing lava fountains rise from stunning Kilauea eruption
`Glowing red lava fountains are captivating visitors at Kilauea volcano in Hawaii as the eruption continues into Christmas Day.
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) reported that the eruption, which began early on December 23, has seen lava fountains reaching impressive heights of approximately 246 feet (75 meters) from the caldera rim.
This activity is primarily concentrated in the HalemaÊûumaÊûu crater, a central feature of the volcano located within HawaiÊûi Volcanoes National Park.
` After a brief pause in activity on December 23, the eruption reactivated on Christmas Eve, with scientists noting fluctuations in the intensity of the lava fountains. Observations from HVO indicated that the lava flows are advancing at a rate of tens of yards per hour, covering significant areas of the crater floor.
By midday on December 24, lava had spread across approximately 650 acres (about one square mile) of the caldera, showcasing KÄëlauea's ongoing volcanic dynamism.
The US Geological Survey has maintained a WATCH alert level for KÄëlauea, emphasizing that while the current eruptive activity is confined to the summit area, it could change in vigor over the coming days.
The public is advised to exercise caution due to potential hazards associated with volcanic smog, known as vog, which can affect air quality downwind.
Visitors to HawaiÊûi Volcanoes National Park are experiencing heavy congestion as they flock to see this natural spectacle.
The National Park Service has warned of long delays at entrance stations due to increased traffic from those eager to witness the vibrant display of molten rock and gas.
As KÄëlauea continues to exhibit its characteristic eruptions, it remains one of the most active volcanoes globally, drawing attention from both scientists and tourists alike.
